My panel for The Covid Chronicle project was inspired by the glorious weather that we experienced in the Spring of 2020 during the first lockdown. Flowers bloomed, gardens were a riot of colour, the fields looked joyful, and all around us Nature carried on regardless, plants and animals happily oblivious of what was happening to the people of the world. I wanted to depict those bright colours, and chose to make the circle almost like a clock, denoting time, with a section showing night time, and a bright disc which is both the sun and a strawberry moon. I used actual plant materials, lavender spikes, rosemary branches and Herb Robert leaves to create Gelli prints on fabric, which I then cut out, layered and stitched into the patchwork centre. The work is decorated with hand and machine embroidery. Apart from missing my family and friends dreadfully during the enforced house arrest, especially my baby grandson, as an artist I was quite happy in my studio and was very busy and industrious during that time, and consider myself lucky, when for many it was a very different experience. I hope this is reflected in my work.
