New Zealand
In March 2020, after watching the pandemic hit the world from afar, the population of New Zealand were stunned at the speed in which the governments locked the country down to avoid the spread of Covid-19. Collectively we looked to our leaders for guidance and assurance as we walked away from businesses, our lives, and bubbled up. We willingly stayed home, united in the belief of protecting each other and as a team of five million we eliminated Covid-19 entirely from our country. Safe, secure. NZ kept in, the world kept out. On 20th September 2021, NZ opened up a bubble with Australia. Delta arrived on an Air New Zealand flight from Sydney into a mostly unvaccinated and unprepared population. Lockdowns again, shorter this time, but we fail to contain it. Anger, disappointment, despair, fear. Areas of NZ kept in, the rest of NZ kept out. Vaccinating now. Really high rates, going well. Adapting and planning for life with Delta, where NZ will re-join the world. No longer will we be kept in and you kept out.
