My hand stitched piece for the Covid Chronicle is a response to the travel restrictions we all endured during the pandemic. We stayed home and became confined to our local environments. The background of my piece is an old map of my Durham home. The phrase “rooted to the spot” and the map routes become “Routed to the Spot” and is a bit of word play. The golden human figure is tethered and struggles through a mass of routes, lines and threads within a red compass circle illustrating restricted movement. The use of gold foil lightens the mood of the piece and represents some of the positive aspects we discovered during the lockdowns.
