I made this square to represent what I did during the first lockdown. With news about the lack of PPE I made some internet searches and found a group ‘Scrubs for Epsom and St Helier Hospitals’. This group of sewers were mostly unknown to one another had volunteered via What’s App or Facebook to make scrubs, gowns, wash bags, hats and tabards. These items were initially for Epsom and St Helier hospitals, then for the wider care community including care homes, hospices, GP practices and Tadworth Children’s Trust. Much of the fabric was donated in the form of sheets and duvet covers. More specialised fabric was bought through fund raising including a sponsored camp-out by the son of a famous DJ and a donation from Surrey Freemasons. Other volunteers organised collection and delivery of fabric and completed items. This square is handmade from remnants of scrubs fabric.
