Just before the first lockdown in March 2020 I found a box of two beautiful large men's handkerchiefs in a charity shop. It struck me that these would be perfect to embroider as my response to the pandemic. This is how my series "Covid-19 a handkerchief" began. Little did I realise that 21 months on I would still be doing them and would be starting on Part 9. My panel for the Covid Chronicle consists of extracts from the first 8 handkerchiefs. I started with "Herd immunity behind the cloak of confusion", form Handkerchief 1 and finished with "Stand Up and Oppose!" stitched around the edge of Handkerchief 8. The latter is part of a quote from the wonderful Professor Kailash Chand, Vice President of the B.M.A. and staunch defender of the N.H.S., who tragically died on 26 July 2021. Covid has affected all of us in so many different ways. I found that, although I obviously could not control events, I could control the needle and the thread and so my handkerchiefs became a strange refuge. I specialise in hand embroidery and am interested in the way embroidery can be used to highlight, question and challenge.
