About

Contributing to this group project has been both a challenging and delightful experience.  Having never embroidered anything other than initials on my daughter’s school uniform, I researched different styles and approaches to making a textile piece and decided that Crewel work, also known as Jacobean work, best suited my design.  I liked the fact that this technique was also used in the Bayeux tapestry.

I usually work with ink, paint, etc on paper and other less conventional supports, and found that using wool on linen was like painting with thread, but even more time consuming! During 2020 I made a collection of paintings giving a contemporary twist to Celtic style knot designs so the wording around the central circle is a simple statement about the way I worked, and stayed relatively sane, throughout the pandemic. The design is based on a Medieval (13th century) tile pattern with the addition of my version of the Covid 19 virus symbol.
